On a beautiful Saturday evening in September, London and surrounding-area community members came together in support of My Sisters’ Place (MSP) at the second annual Night of Country in the Country. Close to 200 attendees, decked out in plaid shirts, country boots and hats arrived at the Purple Hill Opry in Thorndale, Ontario.
George Fox, three-time Canadian Country Music Award and Juno Award winning singer-song writer and author, treated guests to live-entertainment and had everyone dancing all evening. Attendees had a chance to win fabulous auction prizes, enjoyed a country-themed buffet and a chance to win a $10,000 Nash Jewellers Shopping Spree. Additionally, guests had the opportunity to hear Patricia’s story, a woman of MSP, who spoke of resilience, hope and the difference a warm meal makes.
The 2019 event raised $114,000 and the funds will be used towards the nutrition program at MSP, which provides countless woman with a warm and comforting lunch every day.
MSP is a safe, welcoming and inclusive centre that supports women through drop-in and wrap-around services. Many experience multiple vulnerabilities including gender based violence, trauma, chronic mental and physical health challenges, homelessness or housing instability, substance use, and extreme poverty. It is a safe and reliable support system for women facing hardship and can see anywhere from 100 – 150 women daily.
“The nutrition program that includes coffee, snacks and a nutritious meal may be the draw that gives a woman the courage to come through our doors for the first time. The food not only nourishes women physically, but also gives them an opportunity to make the social and service connections to flourish in all parts of their lives,” said Karna Trentman, Director of Community Services at CMHA Middlesex. “A Night of Country in the Country is an important fundraiser that helps My Sisters’ Place run the nutrition program and provide a wholesome meal to women at risk. We are incredibly grateful to our community for their generosity and helping make a big difference in the lives of the women we serve.”
Thank you to our fantastic sponsors, Friends of My Sisters’ Place, the Night of Country in the Country Planning Committee and all of the event attendees and volunteers for making this event an even bigger success than last year! On behalf of CMHA Middlesex, the staff and volunteers of My Sisters’ Place and the women of MSP, we are all incredibly grateful to this wonderful community for their continued support.
