One week, an incredible community, a London Free Press article and the hard work of a group of volunteers has already made a significant impact on the London Coffee House, a program of CMHA Middlesex.
On Wednesday, July 31, the Sustainability Committee, a group of wonderful volunteers, launched a Go Fund Me Campaign to raise $15,000 to build a commercial kitchen in the London Coffee House. The London Coffee House located at 371 Hamilton Road in London has a long history of providing a hot cup of coffee, support and socialization to men and women experiencing homeless, and those at risk. The dedicated team of 12 staff members and 9 volunteers support 80-100 individuals, 7 days a week. People who walk through the London Coffee House doors gain a variety of support from mental health services, housing support services, and a variety of recreation and leisure activities. In addition to support and a hot cup of coffee, the program provides free phone, internet access and laundry services.
“The Sustainability Committee is focused on ensuring the wellbeing and financial health of My Sisters Place (MSP); a program focused on supporting those that are disadvantaged in the London community. Once members of the committee attended the London Coffee House, we immediately recognized how similar our missions were,” said Mathew Fernandez, a member of the Sustainability Committee. “When the London Coffee House asked for support from our team we identified that we could leverage our partnerships to help the program achieve its goal of increasing the services that it was able to offer. Both London Coffee House and My Sisters Place offer such important services to those that need it most on shoe string budgets. We were extremely happy to be a part of the process in help,” Fernandez added.
In just five days, the campaign already reached its goal of $15,000, but the campaign continues to gather support from the London community. In just over a week, the campaign has raised $35,495 and the committee plans to keep the Go Fund Me Page running to raise additional funds, which will be put towards the program and providing nutritional food to the individuals who walk through the London Coffee House doors.
“We are truly overwhelmed by the support the London community has given us,” said Jennifer deMelo, Team Lead, London Coffee House. “This campaign has exceeded our expectations and on behalf of the London Coffee House thank you so much to the Sustainability Committee and to each and every person who supported this campaign. We are grateful for this wonderful community we live in.”
Once kitchen renovations are complete, the London Coffee House will be inviting the London community and all of its generous donors to an official ribbon ceremony to unveil and celebrate the new commercial kitchen with everyone. It is something that could not have been done without the London community’s support.
The campaign will continue to accept donations to enhance the program and provide nutritious food through the Go Fund Me page, as well as by cheque, credit card or through the CMHA Middlesex online donate page.
